Some users may experience the following issues accessing Course Reserves in Canvas

  • Instructors/course designers receive an error message such as “An error occurred while attempting to process your LTI request” when attempting to enable the Course Reserves tool in Canvas.
  • Clicking on Course Reserves items in Canvas displays an error instead of sending the user to the Course Reserves content.  As seen in this screenshot:

Answer

This issue must be resolved on a user-by-user basis by adjusting the privacy settings within the user’s web browser to allow cross-site tracking.

These issues will likely be most prevalent for Safari web browser users as the Safari web browser is configured to prevent cross-site tracking by default; however, these “do not track” privacy settings are also offered by other major web browsers such as Google Chrome or Firefox and may potentially cause issues if enabled.  Note that Google Chrome’s Incognito mode will also block third-party cookies by default and cause issues accessing Course Reserves content within Canvas in private browsing windows.  Tracking may also be disabled in the user’s web browser if a privacy browser extension such as Privacy Badger, Ghostery, or uBlock is installed.

Instructions for configuring these privacy settings for several major web browsers are detailed below.

Safari

  1. Navigate to Settings > Privacy within the Safari web browser application
  2. Uncheck the Prevent cross-site tracking option.

Google Chrome

  1. Navigate to Settings > Privacy and Security > Third-party cookies within the Google Chrome web browser application or enter the URL chrome://settings/cookies in the browser to navigate directly to this page
  2. Disable the Send a "Do Not Track" request with your browsing traffic option.
  3. To access Course Reserves content while in Incognito mode, change the default behavior from Block third-party cookies in Incognito mode to Allow third-party cookies.

Firefox

  1. Navigate to Settings > Privacy & Security in the Firefox web browser application
  2. Set the Do Not Track setting on this page to Only when Firefox is set to block known trackers
  3. If the Strict privacy profile is enabled on this page, switch to the Standard privacy profile or configure an appropriate Custom privacy profile that allows tracking content from websites.
